Energy Services Specialist Program
Call us if you are building a new home or replacing
an existing heating/cooling system. We have information
on how to build an energy efficient home. We also
have the latest information about operating costs
on different types of heating/cooling options. Our
experts can come to your home and perform an energy
audit to determine what can be done to improve your
home’s comfort level and save you money. This
is free of charge to our members. Our number is (260)463-7165

The Advantages of Electric Heating and Cooling
Selecting a heating and cooling system is an important
decision. That decision should be based on many factors,
including cost, reliability and comfort. An inferior system
could cost you less to install, but you'll pay more in utility
bills each month and for as long as you own the home! Given
today’s improvements in technology over the traditional
resistance-type electric heating units in combination with
one or more window unit air conditioners, 21st century homeowners
should carefully consider the benefits that the new centrally
located electric heating and cooling systems provide. The
following lists are a variety of options:
- Electric
Heat Pumps
A heat pump is a central heating and cooling system.
It is clean and safe and provides very comfortable heating
and cooling. There's no pilot light or flame in the
system, so no harmful gases are produced. No vents are
required, reducing the risk of leaks in your roof. Heat
pumps produce warm, even comfort with no hot or cold
spots. And the systems emit more moisture with the heat
than a gas furnace so it's more comfortable. In the
summer, the operation of the system reverses to provide
cooling comfort.
- Geothermal
Heating and Cooling
A geothermal heating and cooling system is usually
more expensive to install, but can save you money in
the long run because of its unmatched efficiency. The
added expense is usually recovered in two to six years
through energy savings. Geothermal systems are the most
efficient form of heating and cooling on the market
today. They help keep your utility bills low and make
you a steward for conserving our natural resources.

Dual
Fuel Heating and Cooling
In the winter, a heat pump can work together with an
oil, propane or natural gas furnace to provide comfortable
and efficient heat. When the temperature outside dips
below approximately 25 degrees, a heat pump will automatically
switch to a back-up source for heat. That back-up source
could be a built in electric unit in the heat pump or
an external oil, propane or natural gas furnace. When
you pair an oil or fossil fuel furnace with a heat pump,
the life of both heating units is extended and you stay
comfortable. You can actually save $250-$350 a year
on your heating costs by adding a heat pump to an existing
oil, propane or natural gas furnace.
